SOCH Foundation Hosts The First Annual Great Causeway Challenge
Calling all experienced or novice bikers and runners! If you are looking for an event to test your endurance, or simply want to enjoy a morning run or bike ride amidst scenic views of the bay and wildlife preserves from Manahawkin to the Barnegat Lighthouse, the First Annual Great Causeway Challenge is the event for you. The Challenge takes place on Saturday, April 22 at 8:00 am at Southern Regional High School, Route 9, Manahawkin.
The Great Causeway Challenge grew out of the Duathlon, which raised over $100,000 to benefit pediatric services at SOCH over the past four years. “Instead of a duathlon, which was a run-bike-run event, the Great Causeway Challenge will feature a Biathlon - a 30 mile bike ride and a 10k run,” explained Michael Bleiman, MD, chair of the Department of Pediatrics at SOCH who is spearheading this event.
In contrast to previous years, the Great Causeway Challenge offers participants a choice, based on their skill level. People can choose to compete in the biathlon, or just the bike, or just the run. However, there is one component of the event from past years that Dr. Bleiman did not want to change, the “1 Mile Fun Run” for kids.
“We wanted to offer something for everyone, and the 1 Mile Fun Run is a great way to get your kids outside and involved in healthy activities,” said Dr. Bleiman, a strong proponent for prevention of childhood obesity. “It’s really a great way to spend time together as a family and raise money for the Hospital’s programs to promote healthy kids.”
Throughout the course, hydration, first aid and radio communications will be readily available. Complimentary refreshments will be provided for all participants, and an awards ceremony will immediately follow the event. Registration fees vary, depending on the level of participation. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for businesses.
